Wenger will step down after nearly 22 in charge this summer as Arsenal look to go in another direction.
Wenger yesterday admitted the timing of his departure wasn’t down to him before a scrambled statement on Arsenal’s Twitter page claimed he was in fact leaving by his own accord.
But Wenger has said he is not retiring and that he hopes to continue working in football.And he has now claimed he wants another top job.
Ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Atletico Madrid in the Europa League he said: “I hope these are not my last European cup games – my target is to play in Europe again.”
Wenger has been linked with moves to Monaco, PSG and the France national team as well as a shock move to Everton.
He has previously rejected offers from Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and both Manchester clubs.
And after finally deciding to leave north London he is expected to take a break before continuing somewhere else.
“I’ve had no break [from football management] for 35 years,” said Wenger.
“You can look around, and that doesn’t exist. I don’t know now how addicted I am.
“I am like a guy who plays Russian roulette every week and suddenly has no gun. I will see how much I miss that gun.
“You live always in extreme situations. When I started at 33, I thought I would never survive in this job, but you learn to dominate your emotions.
“You are never sure if you do the right thing. It will be surreal when I don’t work. At the moment I work.”
Arsenal are beginning the process of replacing Wenger with Luis Enrique and Diego Simeone, who Wenger comes up against tonight, among the favourites.
Max Allegri, Brendan Rodgers, Mikel Arteta and Patrick Vieira are other names in the frame.
“They need to make the right decision, even if you have to be bold,” Wenger said.
“Is it former people who worked here? That is even better.
“But there are many players who had qualities. I don’t influence that choice, but I will stand behind the decision. Of course I have a high opinion of Luis Enrique.”
