The second Stanza of the Nigeria Premier Football League resumes today after a one month break due to the general elections.

Games will kick off from today particularly in Group B when former league Champions Enugu Rangers will host Bayelsa United at 4pm. The flying antelopes are currently not having the best of times as they are 7th on the long just 2 places and a point over relegation. A win is of utmost importance to the Abdul Maikaba led side.

Relegation threatened Daakada Fc will host Niger Tornadoes at the Nest of Champions also by 4pm today. Daakada have only one a game so far and sit bottom of Group B.

Newcomers Doma United will play host to league leaders Lobi Stars. Savanna Tigers are currently impressing a lot of people with their strong display so far in the league. A loss to Lobi Stars during the last game of the first stanza put a dent to their impressive run, as they currently sit 6th on the table with 12 points.

Wikki Tourist in Bauchi will take on another season surprise in Sunshine Stars of Akure. Wikki Tourists are currently 9th on the log and a win could get them out of the relegation places.

Reigning league champions Rivers United will play host to Abia Warriors. Rivers United have closed the gap on Lobi Stars to just a single point after the victory over Enugu Rangers on Wednesday. A victory over Abia Warriors at the Adokiye Amasiemaka stadium will see the then top the league and solidify their quest to join other teams in the Super Six.

The biggest clashes will take place on Sunday in Group A with Enyimba welcoming surprise package of the season Bendel Insurance and Akwa United take on Shooting Stars.

Akwa United will be looking to secure all maximum points to solidify their spot in the place of qualification into the Super Six. Gbenga Ogunbote will be looking to improve on the standings of the Oluyole Warriors having been disappointing so far this current term.

In Aba, Enyimba will be looking to avoid back to back losses against Insurance. They lost by a lone goal in the reverse fixture and will be looking to avoid a home defeat. Finidi George led side are seven points behind the Edo based side.

Jos will play host to the game Plateau United and Gombe United by 4pm. Fidelis Illechukwu is looking to secure back to back continental qualification for Plateau United and a victory over The ‘desert foxes’ will help continue the chase.

Remo Stars will be banking on the addition of former League top scorer Junior Lokosa, Ifeanyi Anaemena and three others in their bid to qualify for the continent. Daniel Ogunmodede will hope to reignite their quest by defeating Nassarawa United who made over 8 new signings in the just concluded mid season transfer window. Remo Stars lost the reverse leg 2-0 to the Solid Miners.

It happens to be a relegation 3 pointer in Akure has Kwara United welcome El-Kanemi warriors of Maiduguri. The Akure based would be looking to complete the double over El-Kanemi, after defeating the Borno based side 2-1 away from home. They will be hoping the change of venue will be instrumental in their survival in the league.

The league is set to be more intense with teams seeking to gain qualification to continent and also avoid relegation. The Interim Management Committee led by Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye speaking on the resumption of the second stanza assures fans of the highest quality of play and utmost excellence. He said, “We, first of all, want to commend the clubs and their players for a near-perfect first stanza of the season and for the rest of the season, the highest standards of excellence in quality of play and adherence to the rules is required”.

He commended fans and stakeholders for their loyalty to the top flight league and has promised the improvement of officiating as the league enters its most important stages. The charmain said, “Our commitment to fairness on and off the field of play is even reinforced by our determination to have only the very best clubs qualifying for the play-off at the end of the season”, Elegbeleye assured and tasked the clubs to provide value for fans through improved standard of play.

With a total of 180 goals scored in the first stanza of the league, fans will be expecting more actions and thrill as the league resumes.
