Nigerian Runners will earn dollars at the 2021 edition of Bigi Abeokuta 10km race, Nairasports reports

The race which is tagged Naija Running For Homeland will only be opened to indigenous runners slated for November 13 in Abeokuta.

The Winners of the male and female category will be going home with $2,000, while the first and second runner up will earn $1500 and $1000 respectively.

The route for the race will start from Ake palace to the MKO Abiola Stadium, with participants to register with N2,500.

This was revealed by the Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, Hon. Bukola Olopade on Tuesday in Abeokuta.

He added that the race is unique from other road races in Nigeria.

According to him, “Rite foods decided to take up the headline sponsorship of the race because of its verve to promote everything Nigeria.
This is a unique race this year because of the encouragement given by Ogun State Sports Commissioner. Organisers decided that this year’s edition will be strictly for Nigerians. It is the opportunity for Nigerian athletes to excel to be able to compete with the East Africans.

“All local runners will go back home with their prize money in dollars. It’s a local race with foreign money. This year’s edition is tagged Naija running for homeland. Our people should come out to enjoy this race.” he said

On his part, the Ogun State Sports Commissioner Hon. Kehinde Oluwadare reiterated that the race is part of the gun state government in giving the youths enabling environment to excel.

He said: “This race is in tandem with the program of the Governor under the youth empowerment scheme. Without an enabling environment, this race wouldn’t be smooth and this is what the Government is working on. The race will boost the economy of the state and empower our youths.

The Brand Manager of Rite Foods, headline sponsor of the race, Miss Bolu Adedugbe said that the race is to change the narrative about made in Nigeria products.

Her words, “This will be the second time that the brand will be sponsoring this race. Promoting everything Nigerian to make it global informed our interest. We are going to be promoting our local talents and empower our consumers. The Olympics is nearby, we want to use this medium to prepare our athletes. On the 13th of November, Abeokuta is going to experience the Bigi experience like never before. We are going to have all Nigerian athletes racing for dollar prize money.”
