Nigerian representatives at the ongoing Davis Cup World African qualifier in Egypt on Tuesday had mixed results as some won while some lost their games.
The Under 16 Boys from Nigeria beat their Namibian counterparts 3 sets to love as Abdulraheem Isa won the first match 3-6,6-1, 6-4. while David Ekpenyong also beat his Namibian opponent 6-3 and 6-0.
In the Doubles, Abdulraheem and Ekpenyong won by 6-3 and 6-0 as Nigeria won all their 3 games against Namibia in the under 16 boys category.
In the Boys under 14, Nigeria lost all 3 games against Tunisia as Ekiti born Seun Ogunsakin lost to Tunisian Number 2 by 6-1 and 7-5 while Mubarak Ganiyu from Oyo State lost to Tunisian Number 1 6-1 and 6-3.
In the boys under 14 double, Seun and Jade lost in 2 straight sets to Tunisia.
The boys under 14 must beat their Egyptian counterparts on Wednesday to stand the chance to qualify to the championship.
Nigeria coach, Muhammed Ubale who commended Seun Ogunsakin for his doggedness and skill said the player amd others from Nigeria would have performed better if there were more tennis exposure through regular quality competitions.
The coach also said Seun Ogunsakin was used to hard court, hence the clay court at the World Davis Cup Qualifiers in Egypt affected his performance.
He noted that while other African countries keeps their players in shape mentally, psychologically and physically, Nigerian players have lots of issues affecting their performances including lack of competitions and facilities.
