Nigeria’s CAF Confederations Cup representative, Rivers United, has shed light on the controversy surrounding their matchday kit during the first leg of the 2nd qualifying round against Etoile Filante.
In a viral image circulating on social media, Rivers United was seen donning an all-blue jersey manufactured by Nigerian brand Owu, accompanied by green socks from the German brand Adidas.
Fans criticized the choice of socks, prompting the club to issue a statement.

He explained, “We arrived in Yamoussoukro, Cote D’Ivoire, with the team’s registered colors of white and blue. However, at the pre-match meeting, the home team presented all white for outfield players and pink/pink/blue socks for the goalkeeper. We presented all blue for our outfield players, resulting in a clash of colors for the socks.”
Charles continued, “According to the rules, in case of a clash of colors, the away team is required to change. We requested that, for fairness and sportsmanship, the home team change only the goalkeeper’s socks, but they refused. With less than 48 hours to kickoff, we had no choice but to source green socks from the market.”
The former champions of the Nigerian Premier League will host the Burkina Faso-based side in the return leg at the Adokiye Aimesmakha Stadium after the goalless first leg.
