Akwa United on Thursday unveiled Ayodeji Ayeni as the new head coach of the Uyo-based football club.
Ayeni’s appointment, who’s a former coach of Sunshine Stars based in Akure, Ondo, comes after the exit of Coach Kennedy Boboye in the middle of last month – “after a run of poor results”.
Boboye who took over from Coach John Obuh in December 2019 parted ways with the Promise Keepers after leading them to lift the 2020/21 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Cup for the first time since the establishment of the club in 1996.
Akwa United in announcing Boboye’s departure had said he “failed to replicate that form [NPFL Cup win] after twelve rounds of matches this season in which his side has managed four victories, five draws and three defeats, leaving the club 8th on the log with 17 points from 12 games”.
“The club wishes Coach Boboye well in his future endeavors,” it added.
