Seven time Olympians, Segun Toriola has claimed that the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) still want him to continue representing the federation at major tournaments.
Toriola reveals this while speaking with NAIRA SPORTS at the just concluded Africa table tennis club championship on Friday, saying he is still targeting to play in the next Olympics.
”I will retire soon normally I should have retired since two years back but my federation still want me to play that why I keep playing for my team because I don’t want to retire without leaving people, there is lot of things around why I was still playing. I still want to play in the next Olympics so I’m planning to qualify. ” Toriola
The 44 year old, maintained that he thinks he still in his 20s that age doesn’t affects his games.
He said further that NTTF has improved over the years in developing young talents that will represent the country In coming years, saying Nigeria will win medals in table tennis at the All African games in morocco later this month.
“Age is nothing it is only for you to train hard, If you have the believe that you are not old, you will have the power to train, for me I still believe I’m In my 20s, that is what is keeping me moving, in sports when athletes start to think about their age then they are finished.
”Team Table tennis has been trying to work very hard, we are one of the favorites that will win medals in Egypt. We have a lot of chances to win medals, I’m 100% sure that we will win medals but we have to try to win as much as possible.
“The standard in Nigeria has been good for now compared to few years back but for me we need to play more competitive games, right now we have young minds that are ready to make the country proud than back to those days.” he said
Speaking on importance of the all Africa Cup, Toriola told NAIRA SPORTS that the competition creates an opportunity for the young ones to prepare ahead of the All African Games
“Young ones are very happy because it create opportunities for them, this tournament is very important because it is like a preparation for all African games” he said.
